  1. Chapter 6 - Promotions & Demotions

6.1 - Information Regarding Promotions

California Highway Patrol | Standard Operating Procedures

Promotions are NOT to be asked for AT ANY TIME.

Troopers will be promoted based on competence, time in grade, and ability to meet promotion requirements.

Promotions will be handled by a panel comprised of the Office of the Assistant Commissioner, Chain of Command, and Supervisors.

All members of the panel will provide feedback and insight on Troopers being reviewed for promotion.

These panels will convene around the 5th, 20th and 30th of every month, and promotions will be awarded no later than the 6th, 21st and 31st of each month respectively. Every pay grade within the California Highway Patrol has certain requirements for individuals to be qualified for a promotion. Promotion boards shall convene every 5th through the 30th of every month and if a Trooper is to be promoted, they shall be promoted not later than the 3rd of the month. Meritorious promotions will be considered between the 5th, 15th and 30th day of every month, and shall only be given for outstanding conduct and ability. Meritorious promotion shall not normally be a means for promotion. Any Trooper who has been striked during a period of consideration for promotion or that is the accused party of an ongoing investigation for misconduct or violation of procedure will not be promoted to the next pay grade until that matter is resolved.
