3.5 - Officer Involved Shootings

California Highway Patrol | Standard Operating Procedures

When a Trooper of the CHP discharges their weapon they must notify a supervisor of another department and wait for a supervisor to clear them for patrol. Supervisors will look at whether you followed your use of force guidelines and also our weapon structure/guidelines. Supervisors will review your bodycam/dashcam, CCTV, and take statements from everyone on the scene. Clearing yourself off a scene prior to being cleared by a supervisor will result in disciplinary action against you. No rank is exempt from this policy. If you're the highest-ranking on duty or the only supervisor the next highest ranking will perform the investigation.

California Highway Patrol Supervisors will not investigate an officer-involved shooting as at Indiana State Police we are very much against the Idea of Corruption and with for our department to have no corruption and especially to ensure all Officer Involved Shootings are investigated correctly.
